Open Source Hosting Options
IHSystem supports a number of open source software initiatives. The open source
movement has produced some spectacular products, like the world's most popular web
server, Apache. Please read about the open source programs we support below.
Apache Web Server HTTP Server is based on the the web's most popular server, the
Apache HTTP server, developed by Apache Software foundation.
Tomcat JSP Server
Tomcat is the servlet container that is used for Java Servlet and JavaServer
Pages technologies. Tomcat is developed in an open and participatory environment
and released under the Apache Software License. Tomcat provides performance
optimizations and reduced garbage collection, server monitoring using JMX and the
manager web application, scalability and reliability enhancements from previous
releases, and enhanced security manager support.
Tomcat is described
as a "reference implementation" of Java Servlet and Java Server Page specifications.
You can use Tomcat as a standalone application with its own Web server, or
along with another Web server, such as Apache. Tomcat requires a Java Runtime
Enterprise Environment that conforms to JRE 1.1 or later. Tomcat is essentially
known as an association of the best-of-breed developers from all over the world.
MySQL Database Server MySQL is an open source relational
database management system. It allows users to utilize the capabilities of SQL to
add, access, and process data in a database. MySQL is best suited for managing
content and many proponents believe its best features are its speed, reliability,
and flexibility. MySQL provides API's (Application Programming Interfaces)
for C, C++, Eiffel, Java, Perl, PHP, Python, and Tcl. MySQL provides full
function and operator support of the SELECT and WHERE parts of queries.
The
MySQL database server is the world's most popular open source database. It
contains a very easy-to-use and customizable architecture. Code reuse and the simple
creation of features rich in functionality have made the MySQL database server
the fastest, most compact, stable, and easy to use open source database management
system.
PostGreSQL Database Server
PostGreSQL, along with
MySQL Database Server, is another popular database tool. Many of the PostGreSQL
features are also found in higher-end database systems. It is not as popular as
MySQL, but is still widely used in web sites as a backend database server. Driving
the development of PostGreSQL is the PostGreSQL Development Group. It is
a community of individuals, groups, and companies operating together.
Ruby on Rails Ruby on Rails, also known as Rails or RoR, is
an open source web framework built for the Ruby programming language. Featuring
tools that makes the common development tasks easier, Rails offers, among
other tools, scaffolding (dynamic and generation)for simplified database interaction.
Rails makes extensive use of JavaScript libraries, comes with a simple Ruby
web server and Rake build system, giving developers a basic development environment
out of the box.
PHP
PHP, a highly popular free, general purpose scripting language, produced
by The PHP Group, originally built for dynamic web page creation, can be used for
server-side scripting, command line interface and in standalone graphical applications.
PHP can be deployed on almost all web servers and every operating system
and has been used in more than 20 million domains and on more than one millions
IP addresses.
